The postcards will look there best if you can manage to view them on an all-black background, with no other clutter on your screen.

Hopefully, the slide viewer will do this for you automatically. It may not though. If it doesn't (and if you're using Windows) try toggling the F11 key a few times in order to get the menus on the top of the screen to disappear. You might need to also move your cursor up there to the top of the screen and then down again to get the menus to disappear entirely.

Windows users will also want to get rid of the "taskbar" at the bottom of the screen. To do this, right-click on a blank area of the task bar, and select "Properties." Then uncheck the "Lock the taskbar" box, check the "Autohide the taskbar" box, and uncheck the "Keep the taskbar on top of other windows" box. Hopefully, this will remove the taskbar at the bottom.

[Also, if you get a big yellow rectangle and other blank images across the top of the screen, try pressing the “t” key to remove them. And if you have a modem connection, give it some time to load the first image.]

One other potential problem is that Windows likes to display a set of icon buttons whenever your cursor is hovering over a picture. If these icons are coming up for you (and possibly covering up the caption), try moving your cursor to one side of the screen or the other, and they'll go away.

An alternative to using the Javascript slide viewer is to just download all of the slides onto your computer and then view them there. The "Slide Show" button in the "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" does a nice job of clearing the screen to black when it shows the slides, although it doesn't fade from one slide to the next, which is a nice added feature of the Javascript version. To do this, just download the zip file (click here) and use the "Extract all" feature of Winzip to put them all in a diretory somewhere. Then double-click on the first postcard in the directory to bring up the "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer." One of the buttons at the bottom of this viewer puts you in "Slide show" mode.

I hope these tips are helpful. Please let me know if you're still having any difficulties viewing the postcards!
